The end is near. Throughout human history, we have always looked for better ways to meet and satisfy our needs. Our society is obsessed with technology. It is almost as if we have become slaves to the screen. The truth is, most of us cannot last a day without using technology. We have smartphones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches, TV’s, and almost all of us couldn’t bear the thought of going without Wi-Fi. Many will try to deny it, by saying that technology has helped us, but it is the cold hard truth. The more advanced technology becomes; the more control it seems to have on people’s lives. According to Lee Siegel, “we shop, work, play, love, search for information, seek to communicate with each other and sometimes with the world online. We spend more time online than ever before. “ I believe that people have too readily embraced technology, seeking only the benefits, and ignoring the many downfalls. (Teen Ink, Online). The easy access to technology has affected society negatively as they have become too reliant on it. This is made evident by the over reliance on technology leading to the incapability of humans, an addiction to electronic devices causing both mental and physical illness. Technology is also distracting society from important matters.
The massive over reliance on technology has had a negative impact on todays’ society because the more humans rely on technology, the more incapable they become of doing things on their own. The dependence on technology has caused humans to forget how life would be without the use of it. In other words, if there were no technology, mankind would have no clue how to do most of their daily life tasks because they are used to the aid of technology. For instance, if the internet were to suddenly disappear, to a point of no return? “Almost nothing gets done without it nowadays. The more we rely on it, the more it seems impossible to live without it. If it were to suddenly crash and could not be repaired, modern society would simply collapse.” (Collective Evolution, Online). Moreover, Zakaria Bziker proves, that if the internet were to vanish, mankind would not know what to do. Humans today have based their whole life on the internet, that if it didn’t exist, they would not know how to function. In addition, humanity has started to depend on robotic technology for lots of tasks as well. “The problem is humans can’t keep up with all the technology they have created,” said Avivah Litan, an analyst at Gartner. “It is becoming unmanageable by the human brain. Our best hope may be that computers eventually will become smart enough to maintain themselves.” (Crains New York, Online). If humans do not stop depending on robots for an abundant amount of jobs, sooner or later there will be nothing left for us. Furthermore, technology in a way, is causing human brains to regress because the more reliant one gets on technology, the more difficult it will be for one to operate without it.
The massive dependence on technology has caused a lot of people an addiction to electronic devices. The addiction to electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, computers…etc. has caused people to develop mental and physical illnesses, due to being isolated from the outside world by constantly spending time on electronics. Examples of mental illnesses are, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety. Excessive use of electronics has also lead to physical illnesses such as obesity, loss of hearing and eyesight, neck and head pain, and many more. People, often teenagers, have developed violent behavior, due to an obsession with violent video games. In a report written by Alexandra Sifferlin on Aug. 13, 2014, an APA (American Psychological Association) task force reviewed more than 100 studies on violent video game use published between 2005 and 2013. They verified, that playing video games can increase aggressive behavior and thoughts, while lessening empathy and sensitivity toward aggression. (Time, Online). This proves, that video games do in fact make people indifferent to violence. Similarly, technology has resulted in the isolation of people from society. This causes problems such as lack of social skills. The Internet has revolutionized the way people live and communicate, but at a steep social cost, according to researchers at the Stanford Institute for the Quantitative Study of Society (SIQSS). Compared to those who do not use the Internet frequently, those who do; 31 percent of the U.S. population, according to the study, spend a surprising 70 minutes less daily interacting with family and friends, 25 minutes less sleeping and 30 minutes less watching television. (Kenneth M. Dixon, News, Stanford, Online). This proves, that social isolation is impacting negatively on people’s lives. Therefore, people are becoming addicted to the usage of technology, because it is an escape from the outside world and their responsibilities.

When we are focused on a device instead of what’s going on around us we miss a great deal. Technology has caused people to get distracted from important things in life, such as important worldwide news and crises. Instead of responding to the world around us, people are resolving to the use of technology rather than communicating with other people or caring about serious issues in society. According to a CBC article written by Kerry Sauriol, teenagers nowadays, are becoming less concerned with important things in life such as their academic careers, because they are getting distracted by their smart devices. (News Activist, Online). Learning is becoming less important for the younger generation, due to them getting preoccupied with video games, social media, TV watching…etc. Similarly, there is a rise in the number of injuries incurred by people texting while walking or driving. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. Nearly 390,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving. 1 out of every 4 car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving. (Edgar Snyder, Online). To sum things up, technology is being used by a vast amount of people as a distraction and escape from their important tasks in life and the serious aspects of the world they are living in. It is causing a lot of harm to a great amount of people without them noticing it.
In conclusion, humankind is becoming incompetent, because they are leaning on technology for help with everything in life. Additionally, people are becoming dangerously attached to technology, resulting in the development of mental and physical illnesses. Under the influence of technology, people, mostly of the younger generation are forgetting important matters in life and focusing on unimportant things such as social media. Nowadays, technology can be acquired easily by everyone, that people are becoming susceptible to it, not knowing the adverse consequences it has. Unfortunately, one can now refer to humans as technological zombies, as a result of our immense dependence on technology. “I see dead people. No, I see zombies. They walk aimlessly down the street and swerve into my lane on the highway. They’re not under the spell of a witch or voodoo overlord; they’re controlled by their smartphones.” (LinkedIn, Online). What Dennis Shiao means, is that society has become a horde of dead people wondering around with no aim in life. Moreover, one can conclude, that society should restrict the use of technology to a certain degree, before it consumes them and it is too late.
