This is a great post about patient discrimination against health care providers. Ideally, all nurses have encountered discrimination or bias from some of their clients. Often, the healthcare system focuses much on dealing with healthcare providers’ bias or discrimination towards patients but fails to consider occurrences of patient discrimination towards clinicians. Although nurses have a responsibility to care for all patients, when they encounter patients who show discriminatory behaviors, they tend to suffer negative consequences including moral distress (Eichelberger et al., 2018). Personal experience with a discriminative patient is an incident where a novice nurse on rotation was asked by a mother of a little girl whether she was Jewish. She told me she was not Jewish and requested to know why it was a concern. The woman replied that if the nurse was Jewish, she did not need her to treat her daughter.

Patient discrimination has adverse effects on the well-being of healthcare providers in both the short and long term. Care providers who are targeted with prejudice such as discrimination report increased rates of conditions depression, anxiety, cardiac diseases, and hypertension (Corpuz, 2021). Moreover, the emotional load of caring for a discriminative patient is extensive and linked to symptoms of psychological effects such as fear, self-doubt, emotional exhaustion, and cynicism. Different strategies can be used by professional nurses to address discriminative encounters. Other strategies that can be used include depersonalization of the event and keep in mind that the fundamental role of a nurse is medical care delivery. The other strategy is to cultivate a relationship of trust. Discrimination is always inspired by fears in patients and nurses should empathize with the patient and bring attention to the common goal of dealing with the presenting health care needs.

You must proofread your paper. Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
