NRS 451 Topic One Discussion Question: The difference in roles between leadership and management. Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example. As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.

The difference between leadership and management boils down to basically that a leader looks at the big picture and the vision for the company and the manager makes sure that the day to day activities are met for the goals of that big picture. Leaders have followers, where managers have employees. Managers give direction, leaders ask questions, Managers are authoritarians where Leaders are motivators. Leaders create change, managers react to change. Leaders and Managers have the same goals that is where they overlap. One example of this is when a manager is involved in meeting goals, this is a leader’s directive. When leaders are involved in planning, organizing, staffing and controlling, this is a manager’s directive. As a nurse leader I can facilitate change by overlapping directives in making an effort to meet the goals for the day and controlling the daily directives of jobs that must be done thereby achieving a smooth work environment and setting an example for the nurses who see me as a leader in their day to day work life.

Leadership is the capability of an individual can influence, motivate, and contribute towards the effectiveness and success of a group or an organization that they belong to. Leaders are concerned with relationship building (Andersen, 2012). They promote the people who work for them, help them develop, and move forward. Most of the true leaders are sincere, energetic, and are seen by many as role model. Management on the other hand is composed of directing and controlling people or a group at their disposal for the purpose of coordinating and harmonizing that group to accomplishing a set goal. Management focuses on set goals, or structures, with whatever resources they may have at a point in time. “leadership skills are generally glorified as being visionary and doing the right thing, while managerial skills are dismissed as being task-oriented and doing things right” (Azad, Anderson & Sobotka, 2017)Leaders and managers do have overlapping functions. “Some managers are called upon to be leaders in their own right, setting a tactical vision for some project or performance initiative. Many executive-level leaders must manage employees and coordinate budgets and write status reports (Grand Canyon University (Ed), 2018). For example, leaders should be able to take over the tasks that pass by the management positions and decrease the gap between the regular members and managers. Although leaders and managers perform different tasks, their functions do cross each other, and most organizations cannot afford to have leaders who cannot manage and managers who cannot lead. A strong leader is necessary to lead the change efforts. There is no a specific model that will fit each organization or every situation. I would facilitate the change by walking the talk and living by example to my fellow members because change is inevitable. I believe that leaders need to take an initiative role in embracing it and growing with it.

Every nurse has a responsibility to lead within the health care team and manage care for their patients however, there are distinct differences between leadership and management. According to the text, Nursing Leadership and Management: Leading and Serving, author Stacy Whitney states that managers are formally assigned by the organization with a definite source of power and authority whereas leaders lack authority but obtain power through influence (Whitney, 2020). Managers strive to manipulate resources, such as people and finances, to achieve organizational goals. They focus on control, decision making, and results. Leaders on the other hand can be anyone who has willing followers and the focus is on interpersonal relationships and empowering others. While there are distinct differences, management and leadership do however overlap.
Leadership and management are often informally practiced by all nurses. According to the text, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, by the Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, nurses manage and lead by taking responsibility for identifying problems, devising and implementing a plan for improvement, tracking improvement over time, and making necessary adjustments to realize established goals (IOM, 2017). On the floor, nurses manage and direct CNA’s, volunteers, and other members of the healthcare team and delegate when and what type of care must be provided. They lead these individuals through encouragement, teaching them proper technique and explaining why these interventions are implemented. True leadership within the health care team involves mutual respect and effective communication. While not all nurses enter the field of nursing with thoughts of being a leader and manager, they must lead in the implementation, evaluation, and advocacy for ongoing improvement of patient care.
