Biostatistics Final Project Article Review
The health topic of discussion is ‘the dangers of sedentary lifestyle to an individual’s overall quality of life (QoL). In selecting this topic, I was guided by the research question: Does a sedentary lifestyle or irregular physical activity have adverse health effects on an individual? This topic is very important in public health in that studies show that lifestyle conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity are caused by a lack of physical activities (Gowri, Narayanan, Maheswaran, Kapileshwar, Kavithra, & Kamaladevi, 2016). Consequently, this article supports the role of physical activity in improving the general QoL of an individual. Therefore, the public will understand the importance of the physical activity to remedy these conditions. Besides, the article is relevant to nursing and health science professionals in that healthcare practitioners will understand the importance of physical activities in treating or preventing conditions related to the lifestyle behaviour of the patient.
Based on the above, it can be argued that the article is very useful in biostatistics. Biostatistics is a branch that uses statistics in deciding on medicine, public health and biology (Chakrabarty, 2019). For instance, in this article, it is reported that watching TV for at least 7 hours a day increases the risk of cancer by 22%, while eating food while watching TV with no physical activities increases the risk of diabetes by 47% (Gowri et al., 2016). The article further argues that lack of activities increases brain fog and heart diseases. Therefore, using these results from biostatistics, healthcare professionals can make a medical decision based on the findings.
The choice of this article was informed by the fact that it is peer-reviewed by professionals in the public health sector, and it is within five years of review. Furthermore, the article was published by a renowned publisher, the World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research. Besides, this article explores the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, unlike other articles highlighting physical activities’ benefits. The authors have experience in public health, while Gowri is a tutor at Jaya College of Pharmacy.
