HOW WOULD YOU RANK THE IMPORTANCE OF EACH OF THE FOUR PRINCIPLES? PHI 413
Topic 3 DQ 1
The four principles, especially in the context of bioethics in the United States, has often been critiqued for raising the principle of autonomy to the highest place, such that it trumps all other principles or values. How would you rank the importance of each of the four principles? How do you believe they would be ordered in the context of the Christian biblical narrative? Refer to the topic Resources in your response.

The four principles are respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. My belief is nonmaleficence is most important because no one should harm anyone else. Next I would say beneficence because preventing harm to others is important. Justice would be third because fair benefits and risks should be distributed throughout society. Autonomy would be last because without the other three no one would respect anyone’s autonomy. For the Christian narrative they’d be ranked in the order of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice. Beneficence because all actions are intended to help others. Nonmaleficence because above all is to do no harm. Autonomy because people have a right to choose based on their beliefs. Justice because distributing with fairness whether it distributive, remedial, or retributive justice. Everyone has their one views on how they should be ranked. It is important though that all are part of a healthy society and importantly a safe society.

You make a terrific point. All individuals have their way of assigning the importance of the four principles of medical ethics due to their worldview. Learning about and accommodating a patient’s cultural background into their health care (whenever possible as long as the practices will not be harmful to the patient) can also provide insight into a patient’s preferences in what the principles mean to them, their level of importance and how they should be applied in their health care.

Cultural competence is one of the must important aspects in nursing. Patients who feel their needs are being met tend to feel they have received good care. We were just talking about different cultures in my class at Merced College and what we have learned in clinicals about other cultures. During my second semester I learned that Hmong women only drink warm water and eat soup after giving birth. I now know I will ask someone who is Hmong if they want cold or warm water if I’m ever in the same situation again. We should all treat others with respect regarding their cultural preferences. Different cultures may view four principles differently than the Christian view, however we are not there to judge their views.

Hello Brian, thank you for sharing, interesting post. all human beings created in the image of God deserve to be treated with dignity and respect (White, 2020); therefore, the principle of autonomy should be applied to provide the respect that others deserve. A healthcare professional must respect a patient’s decision with their care and treat them with the same respect.
