Tobacco contains over 7,000 harmful substances that can affect infants if inhaled due to polluted air through smoke, especially secondhand smoke. The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control asserts that about seventy of these substances can cause cancer. Due to their level of development, infants are vulnerable to this smoke and get disproportionate effects (CDC, 2020). Their developing lungs and other respiratory organs become susceptible to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. The essence of this presentation is to describe the harmful effects of secondhand smoke on infants and offer a health promotion plan to address the issue and ways to enhance overall health and wellbeing of the infants. The presentation also makes recommendations on how to prevent accidental events due to smoking and resources for parents in community to enhance overall infant safety.
Secondhand smoke is involuntary smoke inhaled by people in different environments. Referred to as environmental, secondhand smoke presents several harmful effects to the affected because of the thousand dangerous chemicals that it contains. Smoking during pregnancy leads to close to one thousand deaths each year. Health conditions associated with secondhand smoke among adults include lung cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke. Infants remain at the greatest risk for secondhand smoke because of the negative effects that it has on them (CDC, 2020). These include increased chances of health infections and respiratory complications due to their developing lungs.
Secondhand smoke causes several health problems in infants and children (CDC). These include more regular and severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, and ear infections. More fundamentally, infants exposed to secondhand smoke are more susceptible to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Children, including infants, get exposed to secondhand smoke mainly at home (CDC, 2020b). Further, infants exposed to the secondhand smoke are susceptible to their dangerous effects like adults. The CDC says that children who live in homes where smoking is permitted have increased levels of cotinine (a biological marker of secondhand smoke exposure) than those who live in homes that do not allow smoking.
Women exposed to secondhand smoke while pregnant have increased chances getting lower birth weight babies. As such, these babies are weaker and have increased risk for many health problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2020) posits that babies whose mothers smoke when pregnant or those exposed to the smoke after birth have weaker lungs than other babies and this increases the risk for different health complications. Secondhand smoke exposure causes acute lower respiratory infections that include bronchitis and pneumonia in young children and infants. Children with asthma experience more severe and frequent attacks due to secondhand smoke. Children and infants exposed to secondhand smoke have increased risk for ear infections and are more likely to require an operation for ear tube for drainage.
Health promotion plans are a critical component of attaining positive aspects of primary care among affected populations. In this case, the health promotion plan for secondhand smoke that impacts infants is essential in allowing parents and care givers reduce exposure and protect the affected infants. The plan also entails providing education and information to parents who smoke on the negative effects of their behaviors to their infants.
