Nutrition is essential to health promotion because it is necessary for our body’s growth, development, and normal functioning. For optimal growth and development, physical activity, reproduction, lactation, illness and injury recovery, and health maintenance throughout the life cycle, adequate nutrition is essential. For a healthy body, a well-balanced diet with enough of the essential nutrients is critical. Disease is linked to both excess and inadequate nutrition. For instance, chronic inflammatory conditions like obesity and cardiovascular disease can be brought on by a combination of inactivity and nutritional excess, particularly in the form of refined carbohydrates and saturated fats. Conversely, deficiencies in essential nutrients can result in slowed growth, compromised immune system, and common conditions like scurvy, osteoporosis, depression, and xerophthalmia.

We are living longer, but living with the consequences of more years stricken with illness and disability. If we are to change this health expectancy trend, we must start at a major source of the problem. Diet and nutrition are now the biggest risk factors for people’s health across the globe. while fewer people are suffering and dying from insufficient food today, an increasingly commercialized processed food supply has moved us in a troubling new direction. Healthy People 2020

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Nutrition plays a vital role in achieving and maintaining a healthy body. In health promotion methods, the nurse must evaluate the patient’s dietary status. Nutrients are necessary for the body to maintain homeostasis. For example, appropriate nutrition improves the function of the immune system. This indicates that a lack of adequate nutrition might result in compromised immune function, which can raise the risk of infection and other inflammatory processes (Oz, 2017). Nutrition is needed for growth and development, tissue repair and regeneration, reproduction, and, ultimately, optimal health maintenance. In addition, an improper diet can lead to a loss in health or raise the likelihood of developing noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc. (1983, “Health Promotion: Better Nutrition”).

Cost is one of the most obvious obstacles to healthy nutrition. In emerging populations, healthy eating is regarded expensive. Fast food is inexpensive and readily available, yet it contributes to the development of numerous pathologic disorders (Martinez et al., 2018). Another obstacle is the time necessary to prepare nutritious foods. Most healthy foods require time to prepare; yet, most members of emerging populations struggle to find the time to cook healthful diets. Some adherents of stringent cultural diets may consume foods with high caloric content, hence increasing their risk of morbidity (Seguin, et al., 2014).
Nutritional deficiencies negatively affect the normal functioning of the body. This can lead to disease conditions and ultimately decrease the quality of health of clients. Vitamin deficiencies can lead to a wide variety of health disorders from moderate to severe (example is vitamin A deficiency resulting in night blindness, immunosuppression) (example is vitamin A deficiency resulting in night blindness, immunosuppression). Similarly, excess nutrition can also cause disease. Nutrients are required in certain amounts and when this is exceeded, it may cause derangement from normal functioning. For example, excess vitamin A can cause alopecia, dry skin and liver problems (Gilbert, 2013). (Gilbert, 2013).
A person’s health is comprised of proper nutrition, physical activity, and a healthy body weight (Healthy People 2020, 2022). All of these factors contribute to the prevention of diseases such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, and cancer (Healthy People 2020, 2022). In addition to any other diseases for which a patient may be genetically predisposed. The nation has a high obesity rate, with 1 in 3 adults and 1 in 6 children and adolescents being obese (Healthy People 2020, 2022). Nutrition is the central component of health promotion due to its influence on the development of such factors.

Emerging populations face a number of nutritional challenges, some of which are completely out of their control. Malnutrition is frequently caused by poor dietary habits (WHO, 2018). Current food systems do not provide nutritious foods for the population (WHO, 2018). In perspective, there are regions of the world where people do not consume sufficient food to obtain the correct amount of nutrients required to survive or maintain a healthy lifestyle (WHO, 2018). On the other hand, some individuals consume an excessive amount of unhealthy, fattening, and sugary foods, which can lead to obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, and high blood pressure, as mentioned previously (WHO, 2018). The term “hidden hunger” describes a frequent nutrition problem (WHO, 2018). This occurs when a person appears healthy, but suffers from vitamin and mineral deficiencies (WHO, 2018). This results in anemia, which affects 613 million women worldwide and also plays a significant role in maternal mortality (WHO, 2018). The prevalence of fad diets is an additional factor contributing to malnutrition. Nutritional deficiencies affect more than a person’s BMI. Diseases such as rickets, hypocalcemia, scurvy, vitamin K deficiency, pellagra, iron deficiencies, beriberi, protein energy malnourishment, and osteomalacia can affect malnourished individuals (WIC, 2018). Vitamin K deficiency can cause severe heart problems (WIC, 2018). Malnutrition can result in cell damage and numerous other health problems. Wellness is wealth.
