An understanding of statistics is essential if the numerous reports and documents issued within the healthcare industry are to be scrutinized and considered critically. There has been an increase in the development of research-based and evidence-based practice (EBP) in healthcare over the last two decades. Understanding statistics and analysis helps healthcare personnel make sense of the research studies that underpin EBP and enables practitioners to undertake their investigations. Health care practices are not based on research and are not assessed, planned, and evaluated to see if it makes a difference in patient care, leading to unsafe practices and patient harm (Scott & Mazhindu, 2014).
In the operating room, we use statistical data to evaluate patient care, such as that related to patient positioning pressure injuries. Statistics are also used to develop quality measures or metrics related to surgical on-time starts, operating room turnover times, surgeon block utilization, case cancellations on the day of surgery, and patient through-put times. Other applications of statistics in the operating room are staffing plans, cost per case, materials management, and resource allocation. This data is used for best practices in patient care, operational room efficiency, and value-based healthcare practices within the hospital.

Irene,
Your patient positioning patient injuries example was remarkable.

Hi Irene,
Statistical information is invaluable in determining what combination of goods and services to produce, which resources to b allocation in producing them and to which populations to offer them. Healthcare statistics are critical allocative and production efficiency. Inevitably, allocation decisions involve trade-offs-off the costs of lost or missed opportunities in choosing one economic decision over another. Reliable statistical information minimizes the risks of health care trade-offs.

Understanding statistical concept is important in health care because it helps to get the best possible outcomes for the patients and helping them to get the best care possible, it will also help to identify patient care trends by using data.
Statistics is greatly influenced in health care operation in the electronic medical records units, because they contains lots of important information’s such as birth weights, birth rates, morality rates, diagnosis, and testing result of the patients, which can help to answer questions through data analysis (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018). Due to the analyzed data, there would be quality care delivery to the patients (Helbig & Ambrose, 2018).
As an organization, statistics helps to know how many people in the country have a disease or how many people are infected with dsease within a certain period of time.
Know the affected age group by their location, race, ethnic group, sex, age, profession, income level, and level of education. Which will help to identify health disparities. Furthermore, it helps to know whether a particular treatment is safe and effective for their patients. Also, to know the birth and death rate, how many people have access to and use health care in the organization in a period of time. The quality and efficiency of the health care that we are rendering to the patients. Understanding the impact of government programs and policies on health care delivery or systems. Moreover, identifying the risk factors for different type of diseases (Medlineplus, 2020).
All these will help nurses to care for their patients appropriately, because the data would have helped identify some weak or strong. It can also help to get needed material or resources needed for patients care.
Statistical knowledge help us to use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present the results. Statistics is a crucial process behind how to make decisions based on data, and make predictions. Statistics allows you to understand a subject much more deeply.
